[h=1]Vietnamese yards to have a good stake in drilling rig project[/h]Friday, 30 Nov 2012 Russian-Vietnamese oil company Vietsovpetro is in talks with Asian yards about building a drilling rig likely to cost about US$600 million.
South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries and Singapore’s Jurong Shipyard have submitted bids for the project. Vietsovpetro wants the rig to be built entirely in Vietnam. But the two yards are said to be offering to build the hull and main superstructure in Vietnam with the complex fitting out to be handled in South Korea or Singapore.
Vietsovpetro wants to generate as much work as possible for Vietnamese yards from the project. But no Vietnamese yard has experience in undertaking the turnkey construction of a drilling semisubmersible. Four Vietnamese yards have been nominated to participate as supporting contractors to Samsung and Jurong in the rig building tender. They are Vietsovpetro’s yard operating unit, PTSC,
    PV Shipyard and Dung Quat.
