Fixed Offshore Platforms - A Structural Designer’s ViewWorking in the oil & gas sector, I’m always amazed at how much engineering sits behind what the world simply calls an “oil rig.”This colourful illustration shows a fixed jacket offshore platform, and I wanted to break down the key components in simple terms so anyone can understand the structure behind offshore production.
    Topsides
The heart of the platform. This is where all production, processing, power generation, and control systems are installed. Every module is designed to handle continuous operations in harsh environments.
    Living Quarters
The accommodation block where offshore teams live, work, and monitor operations. Includes control rooms, cabins, helideck access, emergency shelters and more.
    Flare Boom
A long, angled structure used to safely burn excess or unwanted gas away from the platform. It keeps ignition sources far from personnel and equipment.
    Jacket Structure
The main steel substructure. As structural designers, this is where our work shines - calculating bracing, load paths, member sizing, and ensuring integrity against waves, wind, and current.
    Splash Zone
One of the most challenging areas for corrosion and fatigue. Requires special coatings, thicker members, and constant maintenance planning.
    Legs
Vertical tubular members that transfer all topside loads into the seabed. They support conductors, risers, and form the backbone of the jacket.
    Mudline
The level where the jacket meets the seabed. A critical zone for pile penetration, structural stability, and geotechnical interaction.
    Seabed / Piles
The deep-driven piles anchor the entire structure to the ocean floor. They ensure stability for decades, even under extreme storm and wave conditions.
Offshore platforms are not just structures, they are a blend of precision engineering, safety philosophy, and real-world problem solving.
Proud to be part of an industry that blends engineering, safety, and innovation to build structures that stand strong in the harshest environments.
